Horizontal Shop-Welded Tanks Fabrication

EuroTankWorks fabricates horizontal cylindrical steel tanks and underground drain containers in the modern workshop, equipped by the facilities for metal-roll preparation and welding outfit of the world’s leading producers.

The advantages of our tanks

In the course of fabrication of horizontal steel tanks we are oriented on the most demanding and intelligent customers. Three basic goals are set for our production to make the work effective: competitive price of the finished tank, ideal and stable quality, the shortest period of production.

These goals are achieved due to well-reasoned technology of shop-welded storage tanks fabrication and the modern welding equipment.

Automatic and auto-manual welding equipment Lincoln Electric is used in our production. The welding facilities of such level enable us to provide an excellent quality of welding joints along with the decrease in the time of fabrication and labour expenses.

The welding facility of our production line has a number of advantages:

  • The frameworks of sheet metal-roll, among which are the horizontal tanks, are assembled with the use of automatic welding, which is featured by avoiding contraction, ensuring throat-welding without burn-through and a sufficient decrease of the post-welding procedures period.
  • Modern welding equipment provides the managed penetration and heat input.
  • Low sputter level and the minimal welding blow-out are achieved due to the automatic adjustment of the welding current and optimization of the metal transfer process.
  • High-speed welding does not affect the quality and the view of the welding joint.
  • Regulated background and the trailing edge enable to set the exact volume of heat input, to decrease the probability of burn-through as well as to ensure the needed penetration.

Technological Process of Horizontal Tanks Fabrication

  • Initial check (incoming test);
  • Metal preparation;
  • Manufacturing of the wall;
  • Manufacturing of the endwalls, manway plates and pipe junctions;
  • Backing holders and maintenance shaft production;
  • Tank assembling;
  • Corrosion preventive procedures

To ensure the effective use of the horizontal tank, the pre-production stage demands special attention to the choice of steel type. As a rule, steel of st3sp, 09G2S is used in our production, along with stainless steel types AISI304 and AISI321 of 4 to 10 mm thickness.

The tank wall is a set of several shells, made of roll or steel plate (1500 mm wide).The firmness of the framework is provided by the supportive (with triangle diaphragm plate) and midpoint (interim) stiffening-rings. The rigidity of the tank wall in the course of transportation, re-load and installation is ensured by the horizontal stiffening-rings made of standard section and toe-welded to the wall. Such scheme provides the rigidity of walls, exposed to vacuum and wind influence.

The bottom of the horizontal tank is flat, manufactured with the excessive pressure up to 40 kPa. The pressure level from 40 kPa to 70 kPa requires the conical shaped bottoms. To ensure the framework firmness flat bottoms are often reinforced by the stiffening plates.

The framework of the ground-level horizontal tanks includes two supporting structures: saddle shaped or poles. The angle of contact of the saddle-shaped structure is 60-120°.

The framework of underground horizontal tanks is provided with the maintenance shafts, enabling the access of the staff to the tank dome and technological pipelines.

Corrosion Preventive Procedures

EuroTankWorks also has a bead blasting facility and a paint shop. This is to be seen as one more competitive advantage of our enterprise, as the majority of producers fail to keep the corrosion preventive technology for the finished tanks.

High-quality application of anti-corrosion coating is an important stage of the shop-welded steel tanks fabrication.

After welding all metal units are meant to pass bead blasting processing, after which the coating is applied according to the project. The coated units are dried in special premises, where the temperature, humidity and dust content are strictly controlled. This ensures the long operating period for the tank and its aesthetic exterior view.

The quality standard for the horizontal tanks

The welding procedures were originally worked out and tested. To ensure quality of the welding joints our factory applies a complex of measures. They were taken as the basis for the Welding Operating Conditions, which determine the requirements for welding joints and the order of technological operations as regards the types and the thicknesses of metal roll, type of the weld, steel edge preparation and other parameters.

Our Welding Operating Conditions represent the basic operation document, determining the work of welders and the quality control of the joints.

Correspondence to the Welding Operating Conditions is controlled by the General Welding Operator Service and Quality Control Department.

As a result of thorough work through and strict execution of the Welding Operating Conditions we were able to provide the highest quality of the welding joints. It is considered to be one of the main advantages of the horizontal tanks, produced by the company.
